2019 Mustang World Series Day One Recap

Game 1: Chicago, Illinois Defeats Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in a Forfeit
 
Because of Santo Domingo's flight not arriving until Saturday, August 3, the Dominicans had to forfeit their first game against Chicago. Chicago moves into the winners' bracket and will play Placentia, California at 8:00 p.m. CT/US at the Youngsville Sports Complex. Santo Domingo falls into the losers bracket and will play Manila, Philippines at 6:00 p.m. CT/US.

Game 2: Castroville, Texas Defeats the Bronx, New York 12-4

In game two of the 2019 Mustang World Series, South Zone Champion Castroville, Texas defeated East Zone Champion Bronx, New York 12-4. Owen Harris helped power Castroville’s offense, collecting a game high three hits. 


Castroville scored two runs in the top of the second inning to open the scoring. Wyatt Ducs opened the inning with a walk before stealing second and moving to third on a fielder’s choice. A fielding error on Brady Fillinger’s ground ball allowed Ducs to score the first run of the game. After Fillinger reached on an error, he advanced to second and third on two wild pitches. Fillinger scored the inning’s second run thanks to Christopher Rash’s RBI single to center field. 


Castroville added another run in the top of the third to lengthen its lead. After Hunter Hurtado reached base on a fielder’s choice, he advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt. A fielding error allowed Hurtado to score the game’s third run. 


Castroville scored one more run in the top of the fourth, giving the Texans a 4-0 lead. Joseph Alvarado opened the inning’s hitting with a single to center field. Rash then hit into a fielder’s choice, which moved Alvarado to third. Harris singled to center, scoring Alvarado. 


The Bronx responded in the bottom of the fourth, scoring one run. Kendry Pegeuro started the inning with a walk before stealing second and third. Alex Rodriguez also walked, putting runners on the corners. A passed ball allowed Peguero to score, giving the Bronx its first run of the game. 


Castroville’s offense exploded in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs. Hurtado reach on an error that was followed by Ducs’s single, which put runners on the corners. A fielding error allowed Hurtado to score and moved Ducs to second. A wild pitch and passed ball then allowed Ducs to score, making the score 6-1 in favor of the Texans. After Fillinger singled and stole second, a defensive error on Alvarado’s ground ball allowed him to score the inning’s third run. A series of passed balls let Alvarado score the inning’s final run. 


Castroville added four more runs in the top of the sixth to lengthen its lead. Hurtado led off with a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Ducs then reached on a fielding error, which scored Hurtado. Ducs moved to second on a defensive error that also allowed Lawson Schuchart to reach base. Ducs advanced to third and Schuchart moved to second thanks to Fillinger’s single. Ducs scored on a wild pitch that advanced Shuchart to third and moved Fillinger to second. After a fielder’s choice scored Schuchart and moved Fillinger to third, a wild pitch let Fillinger score Castroville’s fourth run of the inning. 


The Bronx added three runs in the bottom of the third, but this late rally was not enough. Rodriguez opened the inning with a walk before advancing to third on Branden Rosario’s single. Rosario also advanced to second on the throw to try to get Rodriguez at third. A wild pitch let Rodriguez score and moved Rosario to third. Noe Mercedes walked, followed by a fielder’s choice that scored Rosario and moved Mercedes to third. A passed ball allowed Mercedes to score the game’s final run. 


Castroville moves into the winners’ bracket and will play Mexicali, Mexico at 8:00 p.m. CT/US at the Youngsville Sports Complex. The Bronx falls into the losers’ bracket and will play Youngsville, Louisiana at 6:00 p.m. CT/US.

Game 3: Placentia, California Defeats Manila, Philippines 12-2

In game three of the 2019 Mustang World Series, West Zone Champion Placentia, California defeated Asia-Pacific Zone Champion Manila, Philippines 12-2 in a shortened ten run rule, four inning game. Placentia’s pitchers Justin Karg, Kemuel Zhang, and John Burdge only allowed one earned run and struck out eight over four innings. 


Placentia exploded for four runs in the top of the first to open the scoring. Consecutive singles by Logan Sylvester and Andrew Green put runners on the corners. A dropped third strike allowed Syvlester to score, moved Green to third, and let Tucker Hunnicutt reach first. After Hunnicutt stole second, another passed ball let Green score and moved Hunnicutt to third. Darius Selway’s single scored Hunnicutt for Placentia’s third run of the inning. Selway then stole second and advanced to third on a fielder’s choice before Jacob Vasquez’s single brought him home. 


Manila scored one run in the bottom of the first to cut into Placentia’s lead. With two outs, Axl Fallorina singled before advancing to second and third on consecutive passed balls. Another passed ball let Fallorina score Manila’s first run of the game. 


Placentia’s offense exploded again in the top of the second, scoring six runs. Sylvester led off the inning with a walk before stealing second and advancing to third on Green’s single. A series of passed balls then allowed both Sylvester and Green to score. After Hunnicutt walked, Burdge’s triple allowed him to score. A passed ball let Burdge’s score, making the score 8-1 in favor of the Californians. After Selway walked, stole second, and advanced to third on a passed ball, Karg walked to put runners on the corners. Karg stole second before advancing to third on a fielder’s choice that also scored Selway. A balk allowed Karg to score the sixth and final run of the inning, making the score 10-1. 


Manila added one more run in the bottom of the third inning to chip away at Placentia’s lead. With two outs, consecutive singles by Christian Marantal and Rafael Blaza put runners on first and second. After a double steal, Fallorina singled to center field, which scored Marantal. 


Placentia added two more runs in the top of the fourth to win the game. With two outs, Vasquez singled and stole second and third. Zhang then walked and stole second, putting both runners in scoring position. A passed ball let Vasquez score, giving Placentia a nine run lead. Sylvester then singled to center field, scoring Zhang and winning the game for Placentia. 


Placentia moves into the winners’ bracket and will play Chicago, Illinois at 8:00 p.m. CT/US on Saturday, August 3 at the Youngsville Sports Complex. Manila falls into the losers’ bracket and will face Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic at 6:00 p.m. CT/US at the Youngsville Sports Complex.

Game 4: Mexicali, Mexico Defeats Youngsville, Louisiana 20-2

In game four of the 2019 Mustang World Series, Mexico Zone Champion Mexicali, Mexico defeated host team Youngsville, Louisiana 20-2. Angel Nunez compiled four RBI’s to drive Mexicali’s offense. 


Mexicali scored four runs in the top of the first to jump out to an early lead. Ivan Romero hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Francisco Borquez for Mexicali’s first run of the game. With the bases loaded, Andre Figueroa was hit by a pitch, which brought Keysen Escamilla home. A wild pitch scored Jose Salcido for Mexicali’s third run, followed by a passed ball that scored Joset Saldana. 


Youngsville scored its only two runs in the bottom of the first to respond. Kole Harris and Brody Legnon hit back-to-back singles to put runners on the corners with one out. Jude Johnson then doubled, which scored both Harris and Legnon. 


Mexicali added one more run in the top of the second. After Nomar Gonzalez singled, a series of passed balls and wild pitches let him score to give Mexicali a 5-0 lead. 


Mexicali added four more runs in the top of the third. With the bases loaded, Nunez singled to center field, scoring Salcido and Saldana. A wild pitch scored Figueroa for the third run of the inning. Mexicali’s fourth and final run of the inning came on a passed ball that scored Nunez.


Mexicali’s offense exploded for eleven runs in the top of the fourth. Saldana opened the scoring in the fourth inning with a single that scored Escamillo and Vilasenor. Nunez then singled, scoring Salcido and Saldana to give Mexicali a 13-2 lead. Nomar Gonzalez also singled, which scored Figueroa. Another single by Romero scored both Nunez and Gonzalez to give Mexicali a 16-2 lead. A fielding error let Borquez score the eighth run of the inning. Romero also scored thanks to Vilasenor’s single. The tenth and eleventh runs came on back-to-back singles by Saldana and Figueroa that scored Escamilla and Vilasenor respectively.


Mexicali moves into the winners’ bracket and will play Castroville, Texas at 8:00 p.m. CT/US on Saturday, August 3 at the Youngsville Sports Complex. Youngsville will play the Bronx, New York in an elimination game at 6:00 p.m. CT/US on Saturday, August 3.
