2019 Mustang World Series Day Four Recap

Game 13: Placentia, California Defeats Chicago, Illinois 5-1

In game thirteen of the 2019 Mustang World Series, Placentia, California defeated Chicago, Illinois 5-1. Tucker Hunnicutt’s two RBI’s helped secure the victory for Placentia.


Placentia scored one run in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. Logan Sylvester singled and stole second before Andrew Green walked to put runners on the corners. Sylvester scored the game’s first run thanks to Hunnicutt’s single.


Placentia scored another run in the bottom of the second to double its lead. Jacob Vasquez singled hit an infield single before advancing to second and third on two fielder’s choices. A balk then allowed Vasquez to score. 


Chicago scored its only run of the game in the top of the third. Donovan Evans hit an infield single before stealing second and third. Evans scored on Blake Ragsdale’s double to left field. 


Placentia plated two more runs in the bottom of the third to respond. Hunnicutt was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. After Hunnicutt advanced to second on a fielder’s choice and moved to third on a passed ball, Justin Karg’s single scored Hunnicutt. Karg stole second before two wild pitches allowed him to move to third and score, giving Placentia a 4-1 lead. 


Placentia scored its fifth and final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Green singled to center field. Hunnicutt then hit a double to right field, scoring Green. 


Placentia advances to the championship game and will play Mexicali, Mexico at 12:30 p.m. CT/US on Monday, August 5 at the Youngsville Sports Complex. Chicago is eliminated from the tournament after compiling a 2-2 record.

Championship Game: Placentia, California Defeats Mexicali, Mexico 12-8

In the championship game of the 2019 Mustang World Series (MWS), Placentia, California defeated Mexicali, Mexico 12-8. Tucker Hunnicutt powered Placentia’s offense with four RBI’s.


Placentia scored three runs in the top of the first to jump out to an early lead. With one out, Logan Sylvester singled before stealing second and third. Hunnicutt grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Sylvester. After John Burdge singled and stole second, Jacob Vasquez walked to put runners on first and second. Darius Selway then doubled, scoring both Burdge and Vasquez to give Placentia an early 3-0 lead.


Placentia scored three more runs in the top of the second to double its lead. Justin Karg led off the inning with a single to center field before stealing second and third. Karg was safe on the throw to the plate when Mason Shackleton grounded into a fielder’s choice. Shackleton then stole second before a fielder’s choice allowed him to score. Sylvester then singled and stole second and third before a passed ball let him score Placentia’s sixth run of the game. 


Placentia added another two runs in the top of the fourth to take a commanding 8-0 lead. Bryan Serna led off the inning with a walk before stealing second and advancing to third on a fielder’s choice. Serna then scored on Andrew Green’s single to left field. Green advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third, and scored Placentia’s second run of the inning on a passed ball. 


Mexicali scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to storm back. Heriberto Vilasenor and Jose Salcido hit back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second to open the inning. Andre Figueroa then walked to load the bases. A defensive error on Angel Nunez’s ground ball scored both Vilasenor and Salcido. Figueroa then scored the inning’s third run on a wild pitch. After Fernando Rivera doubled to left field, Rivera scored on Francisco Borquez’s RBI single.


Placentia plated one run in the top of the fifth to take a 9-4 lead. Selway led off the inning with a walk before stealing second and third. Selway then scored on a balk by Mexicali’s pitcher. 


Mexicali added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to continue to chip away at Placentia’s lead. Salcido was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Salcido then stole second and third before Santiago Tong’s single brought him home. Figueroa also singled, which scored Tong. Ivan Romero then singled, scoring Figueroa. 


Placentia scored three more runs in the top of the sixth to build on its lead. Back-to-back singles by Sylvester and Green put runners on the corners to start the inning. Hunnicutt then hit a three-run home run, giving Placentia a commanding 12-7 lead. 


Mexicali managed to score one more run in the bottom of the sixth. Vilasenor and Salcido hit back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. Tong then walked, loading the bases. Figueroa hit into a fielder’s choice, which scored Vilasenor for Mexicali’s eighth and final run of the game. 


Placentia finishes the tournament as the 2019 MWS world champion after compiling a 4-1 record. Mexicali finishes as the 2019 MWS runner-up with a 3-1 record.
