PONY Signed a Two Year Deal to Return the Pony-13 World Series to Whittier, California
Whittier, California is located in Southern California. It is within 20 miles of downtown Los Angeles. Whittier, California was incorporated in 1898 and before it was incorporated it was also known as Rancho Los Nietos. Later, Quakers purchased the land and it expanded to over 1,200 acres. From here, it was known as a large Quaker community along with being well-known citrus and walnut producer. In 1898 Whittier only had a population of 585. By 1970, the City’s population was about 73,000. Whittier, California is the home of our 37th President Richard M. Nixon. He attended Whittier public schools and graduated from Whittier College. The First Lady Patricia was an English teacher at Whittier High School.
Whittier Pony Baseball was founded in 1987 by a group of parents who were looking for a competitive brand of recreational baseball for their children. Whittier Pony Baseball has become the largest PONY League, in membership, throughout the West Zone’s SoCal Region.
Since 1996, Whittier Pony has been a PONY Baseball tournament host for the West Zone’s SoCal Region. The Bronco West Zone has been hosted here since 2007. With the reputation that Whittier has for hosting these tournaments for PONY Baseball & Softball, they were granted the Pony-13 World Series.
The Pony-13 World Series was going to be held at the place that has the most meaning for Whittier Pony Baseball, York Field. York Field has a lot of meaning to the City of Whittier. Whittier is proud of what Whittier Pony Baseball has been doing and all the accomplishments that have taken place there. Victor H. York, an oilman from Whittier, donated the land to the City of Whittier. Mr. York made it clear that he wanted the land to be used as a recreational center for the youth. In 1996, a third field was added to York, along with a baseball stadium for the spectators. Eventually the City added a playground and picnic area as they rededicated York Field as a sports complex. York Field receives more than 125,000 visitors annually.
August 2019, the City Council approved the Cultural Arts Commissions for recommendation for an Art in Public Places project at York Field. In October, PONY West Zone Vice President Joe Gagliardi, Whittier Pony Tony Chiazza and Glenn Costello, and PONY President Abraham Key signed a contract that Pony-13 World Series will be held in Whittier, California until 2021.
