Japan Pony Player #1 Draft Pick in 2019 Nippon Professional Baseball
ONY Baseball is proud to congratulate Yuya Miyagi on being the #1 Draft Pick in 2019 Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB).
The NPB is the highest level of baseball in Japan. There is a total of 12 teams. Each team has a 25 man roster. The rules in NPB are very similar to Major League Baseball (MLB). There are a few differences though, the NPB uses smaller baseballs, strike zone and playing field. In addition, each team is only allowed to have 4 foreign players on the roster.
Yuya Miyagi was born in 2001 in Ginowan City, Okinawa Prefecture. He grew up in a poor family, that they had difficulty providing food let alone buying a baseball glove. Miyagi didn’t let this stop him though. He loved baseball and was determined to be successful at it. When things became tough at home baseball helped him to see the light.
When Miyagi entered into his junior year of high school, he joined the Ginowan Pony team. By joining, he had it in his mind that he wanted to be an NPB player.
In 2015, Miyagi had an experience that not too many baseball players get to experience. The Ginowan Pony team advanced to the PONY Asia Pacific Zone Championship. Unfortunately, Miyagi and his team lost. However, Miyagi was his own champion. He was Japan’s representative player and he had an excellent performance against Chinese Taipei.
Another major achievement Miyagi made in 2015, he was awarded Japan National Team Player of the WBSC U-15.
In 2016, Miyagi and his team were in the same spot as the previous year. They made it to the PONY Asia Pacific Zone Championship. And like the previous year they fell short once again. Again, like the previous year, Miyagi was once again his own champion. He was Japan’s representative player and did a fantastic job against the Chinese Taipei batting line up.
Miyagi entered Konan High School in 2017. While in attendance there, he participated in Koshien in 2017 and 2018.
Miyagi is a dedicated baseball player who did not let life challenges stop him for achieving his dream.
