In memoriam of Charles Wood
Charles R. Wood passed away on March 23, 2020 from a very brave fight against cancer. He left behind a brother Jim. 2 sons Mike, Tom, and a daughter Judy. He was a wonderful Poppie to 8 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.
He was born on November 7, 1940 to Maurice and Sarah Wood of Lynwood, CA. He was the oldest of three sons. He grew up in Lywood and went to school until 1958 when he graduated from Lynwood High School.
He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1959 and was trained for the job of hospital corpsman/medic. He proudly served 4 tours in Vietnam during his twenty plus years of service with the Navy, retiring in 1979 as a Chief. He met Judith Browning and her son Mike at Trinity Foursquare Church of Lynwood. They were married and later he adopted Mike. They had three more children Tom, Charlie, and Judy over the next ten years. After he retired from the Navy he started his own business in landscaping and lawn care.
He served in the Veteran Affairs Commission for the City of Lynwood, he was instrumental in getting the Traveling Vietnam Veterans Wall and the Buffalo Soldiers to perform for Veteran’s Day 2000. He joined the Lynwood Sports Association as the Baseball Commissioner and later became the President of the LSA. He always worked very hard to keep the youth baseball program running, he would run the snack bar himself, he would see to it that the American Legion donates a portion of their 4th of July Fireworks Stand proceeds to Lynwood Youth Baseball Sometime around 2009 he joined the softball coaching staff at Firebaugh High School as an assistant coach and later became the managing coach of their program until his death. He was a Field Director with PONY Baseball & Softball for over 30+years in Southern California.
He is preceded in death by his father Maurice, son Charlie, mother Sarah, granddaughter Shaina, and brother John.
Whether you called him Charlie, Chuck, Coach, Dad or Poppie he will be forever loved and remembered by those whose lives he touched.
