2022 DICK'S Sporting Goods Pony League World Series Day 1 Recap

Game 1 : Hagerstown, MD 6, Bay County, MI 5

The back and forth affair in the opening game of the 2022 DICK’s Sporting Goods PONY League World Series belongs to Hagerstown, Maryland over Bay County, Michigan by a score of 6-5.

Benjamin Briggs of Bay County led off the game with a single and later advanced to third via a stolen base and passed ball. A two out Drew Golk single brought home Briggs for the first run of the game.

Hagerstown didn’t take long to respond as they started off their offensive efforts with a Benjamin Sattazahn and Brooks Norris single. Sattazahn and Norris were later plated on a Rylan Swartz single to give Hagerstown the lead, 2-1.

Another Bay County run was brought home in the top half of the second inning on an Aiden Rivette single that knotted the game up at 2-2. They threatened more runs but their bases loaded opportunity was shut down by Hagerstown pitcher Jackson Coulter as he struck out the final batter.

The game was broken open in the bottom of the third when Hagerstown started to figure out Dawson Lavender’s pitching. He exited in the second inning, ending his day with three runs on four hits in two innings of work. He struck out four.

Drew Goik entered the game in relief and almost immediately surrendered the first run of the inning on a wild pitch that scored Sattazahn. The next run came across an error by shortstop Jaxon Jenkins. Cooper Starkey crossed the plate for the third run of the inning after a Coulter single, making the game 5-2 in favor of Hagerstown. Goik’s day came to an end after pitching one-third of an inning and allowing two runs on one hit, walking three and striking out one. He was replaced by Jenkins.

Bay County stormed back in the top of the sixth and seventh with three runs of their own to make the game 6-5 in favor of Hagerstown. The runs were scored on an error that plated Brady Vrable and a Briggs sacrifice fly. Their efforts fell short, however, as they couldn’t push across the tying run.

Coulter threw a gem before he reached the pitch count as he went four and two-thirds, allowing two runs on three hits, striking out an impressive eleven batters. The save was earned by Swartz.

With the win, Hagerstown will improve to 1-0 and move on to face Johnstown, PA at 6:00pm tomorrow. The loss puts Bay County at 0-1 as they await the loser of the next game between Guaynabo, Puerto Rico and Chinese Taipei who they will face at 2:30pm tomorrow.

Game 2 : Guaynabo, PR 1, New Taipei City, Chinese Taipei 6

New Taipei City scored early and often and their pitching staff held Guaynabo’s offense en route to their 6-1 victory.

Their first run came in the opening frame as Shao-Chun Chang crossed the plate on an error. They tacked on another in the second on a Chiu Sheng-Hung Gao single that sent home Wen-Wei Yang who singled earlier in the inning. A third run came across on a Yang double to make it 3-0 after three.

Guaynabo threatened in the bottom of the third, but they were unable to pull off the double steal as the runner was gunned down at home. New Taipei City took that momentum from the field to add three more runs to their total with their bats. The runs came via a fourth inning Ting-Hao Pan single, a fifth inning error and Gao single. This allowed the deficit to grow to 6-0.

Guaynabo scored their lone run in the bottom of the seventh when Jeyden Flores scored on an error.

The two New Taipei City pitchers were phenomenal on the mound as they allowed only three hits and one run. Yang started the game for them and he went three innings allowing no runs on two hits, fanning five and walking one. Wei-Zhe Hong closed the game out as he allowed one unearned run on one hit. He struck out four.

The Guaynabo pitching staff struck out seven while allowing seven hits. Alan Gipson, Geraniel Nieves, and Nelson Molina had the three hits for Guaynabo.

The win puts New Taipei City, Chinese Taipei at 1-0 as they earn a day of rest and move on to face the winner of Hagerstown, Maryland and Johnstown, PA on Sunday, August 15th, at 5:30pm. Losing drops Guaynabo, Puerto Rico to 0-1 and they will face Bay County, Michigan in an elimination game at 2:30pm tomorrow.
