2022 DICK'S Sporting Goods Pony League World Series Day 2 Recap

Game 3 : Monterrey, MX 6, San Jose, CA 2

The opening game for Day 2 of the 2022 DICK’s Sporting Goods PONY League World Series featured Mexico Zone Champion Monterrey, MX and West Zone Champion San Jose, CA taking the field, with Monterrey emerging victorious by a score of 6-2.

San Jose took advantage of their opportunity to score in the bottom of the first. Their lone run until the final inning came when Tommy Moran singled and was later brought home on an Ethan Williams single.

The 1-0 score stood until Mexico struck in the top of the third and put three runs on the board to take the lead. The first run came on a slow roller Roy Kim groundout that sent Miguel Hernandez home. Their second run was scored via a Luis Guajardo line drive single. A third run was penciled in on a wild pitch that plated Yosiro Eguia to make it 3-1.

Three more runs came in for Monterrey across the next four innings to make the score 6-1. One was scored in the top of the fourth when Diego Alvarado singled. The final two runs came in the fifth on a wild pitch and Hernandez single.

A second run crossed the plate for San Jose in the bottom of the seventh when Moran doubled and brought home Marcus Garcia making the score 6-2. A picked off runner at second thwarted their comeback effort.

Monterrey’s Hernandez settled in on the mound after the first inning and was lights out. He went four and two-thirds innings before reaching his pitch count. In those innings of work, he gave up one run on four hits, striking out five and walking none. He was relieved by Isai Garza who pitched the final innings.

Toby Torres started the game on the mound for San Jose as he went two and two-thirds innings while giving up two runs on three hits, sending three packing. He was replaced in the third by Jaden Taylor.

Eguia and Guajardo each had a multi-hit game for Monterrey. San Jose was led in hits by Torres and Moran who each had two hits.

With the win, Monterrey improves to 1-0 as they will move on to face the winner of Game 6 between Palmview, Texas and the winner of Game 4 between Washington County, Pennsylvania and London, United Kingdom. That game will take place on Monday, August 15th at 8:00pm. The loss puts San Jose at 0-1 as they will take on the loser of the aforementioned Game 4 at 5:00pm tomorrow.
