2022 DICK'S Sporting Goods Pony League World Series Day 3 Recap

Game 6 : Washington County, PA 0, Palmview, TX 1

The first fairly quiet game of the tournament made for a great one as South Zone Champion Palmview, TX took down Washington County, PA 1-0.

Between the two teams, only five total hits were collected, making for a true pitcher’s duel.

Washington County’s first opportunity came in the top of the first when MJ Maruschak reached on an error and later advanced to third, but he was unable to be brought in. They had another great opportunity in the top of the third with the bases loaded after a hit by pitch and a couple walks, but Palmview’s relief pitcher, Jaime Cordova Jr., shut down the opportunity with a big strikeout.

They once again had a runner in scoring position in the top of the fourth but Nicolas Valdez made a phenomenal catch in leftfield to rob Washington of a couple runs.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Palmview had their best opportunity to that point as Matthew Azuara was able to reach base on a single and later advance to second on a steal, however, he was left in scoring position.

While they might have not scored in the fourth, Palmview didn’t waste the next scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fifth. Valdez singled and advanced to second base after Gilberto Rodriguez Jr., walked. A botched pickoff play at second sent him home to make the score 1-0.

A comeback campaign was started by Washington in the top of the seventh when AJ Andronas reached on an infield single and was moved to second via a Sam Stout sacrifice bunt, but the effort fell short as they were again, unable to bring the runner home.

The Texas pitching staff had trouble with their control at times, but held Washington when it mattered most. Gilberto Rodriguez started the game for Palmview and went two and two thirds while allowing no hits and striking out three. He walked two and was replaced in the third after he loaded the bases. Cordova Jr. went the rest of the game and was phenomenal. He allowed two hits and no runs, striking out six.

MJ Maruschak had a great outing for Washington, throwing four complete innings while allowing no runs on only two hits, He struck out ten batters. He was replaced by Cayden Laskosky in the fifth.

With the win, Palmview improves their record to 1-0 and will move on to face Monterrey, MX tomorrow at 8:00pm. Washington’s loss brings them to 1-1 as they will be set to face the winner of Game 8 between San Jose, CA and London, UK. The game will take place tomorrow at 12:30pm.

Game 7 : Bay County, MI 3, Guaynabo, PR 1

In an elimination game, Bay County, MI rode a three run second inning to take down Guaynabo, PR 3-1.

It looked as if Bay County was going to strike in the first inning after a Jeffrey Hartman single with runners on first and second, but Guaynabo center fielder Geraniel Nieves gunned down the runner at home to end the threat.

Guaynabo’s defense couldn’t keep Bay County off the board in the second, however.  With the bases loaded following a Jack Wetters single, Andrew Shufelt double, and Ryan Brey walk, a wild pitch sent home the first of three runs in the inning. The other two runs came in on an Aiden Rivette single and error. The inning gave them a 3-0 lead.

John Lopez led the Guaynabo charge to come back with a solo home run to make the score 3-1. His homer was followed by Jeyden Flores reaching on an error and Kenneth Boria moving him to third with a double. The bases were juiced after Khenluis Lopez walked but Bay County hurler Jaxon Jenkins escaped barely scathed.
