2022 DICK'S Sporting Goods Pony League World Series Day 4 Recap

Game 9: Bay County, MI 8, Hagerstown, MD 2

The morning rematch between Bay County, MI and Hagerstown, MD belongs to Bay County as they take it by a score of 8-2.

A Benjamin Briggs single and steal of second got the table set early for the Bay County offense. He advanced to third on a groundout and Jaxon Jenkins was able to deliver with a single to score him easily and give Bay County the early advantage, 1-0.

Hagerstown looked to respond right back in the bottom half of the frame as Julius Rowe and Brooks Norris singles put runners on first and second with no outs, but a fly out and double play made by third baseman Andrew Shufelt quickly got Bay County out of the inning unscathed. 

Bay County got on the board two more times following another inning with runners in scoring position. Jackson Andreski walked and later scored on a Dawson Lavender infield single. Aiden Revette then plated pinch runner Charlie Maze on a single to make their lead grow to 3-0.

The number nine hitter Jeremiah Hull put Hagerstown on the board in the bottom of the second with a two out single to make the score 3-1. 

An RBI double by Bay County’s Jack Wetters got the run right back as the lead grew back to three runs at 4-1. They tacked on three more in the fifth. These runs were scored on a two run error and Wetters sac fly. It increased their lead to 7-1. A final run was tacked on in the sixth on a Jenkins double that put the score at 8-1. 

Faced with a large deficit, Hagerstown put up one more run on the board in the sixth to make the score 8-2. It was scored via a fielder’s choice. 

In Lavender’s second time facing Hagerstown, he held his own to earn the win. He went five innings before his pitch count was reached. In those innings he allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits, striking out six. Shufelt closed out the game. Their pitching staff only allowed five hits throughout the game.

The hits for Hagerstown came from Julius Rowe, Brooks Norris, Jackson Riser, Rylan Swartz, and Hull. Hull had their two RBI.

The win puts Bay County’s record at 2-1 as they will advance and face the loser of Game 11 between Johnstown, PA and New Taipei City, Chinese Taipei at 10:00am tomorrow. With the loss, Hagerstown is eliminated from title contention. They finish their tournament 1-2.

Game 10 : San Jose, CA 6, Washington County, PA 13



Washington County, PA rebounded from their tough loss yesterday with a 13-6 win over San Jose, CA.

The first San Jose run came in the first inning following a Tommy Moran hit by pitch and Ethan Williams single that scored him.

Washington County quickly responded with a two run MJ Maruschak homerun to make the score 2-1. An error quickly added another run to make it 3-1.

The Washington County offense didn’t stop there as a six run second inning increased the score to 9-1. They scored one run on a Maruschak single and then two more on a Nico Patragas double. A Hayden Stack single brought home a run followed by a Sam Wade double that brought in two more. They tacked on one more in the third on a Matthew Kocan single to make it 10-1.

San Jose mounted a comeback effort in the fifth as they put up three runs to make it 10-4. A Marcus Garcia walk brought in a run and then a Dante Butler single brought in two more. They chipped away with one more in the sixth on a wild pitch that scored Tommy Moran.

In the bottom of the sixth Washington County continued to pile it on as LJ Zidek tripled and sent home two runs while Anthony Giogi walked and sent home their 13th run.

San Jose sent one more home in the seventh but it wasn't enough to defeat Washington County’s offense.

The pitchers from Washington County had a good game as AJ Andronas started the game and went four and two thirds innings while allowing four runs on seven hits. Anthony Giorgi came in for relief and went the rest of the way, allowing two runs on two hits.

Both teams combined for 22 with 13 coming from Washington County and 9 coming from San Jose. 

Maruschak went 3-for-3 with three RBI and two walks.

Moran and Toby Torres both had a multi-hit game for San Jose.

With the win, Washington County improves to 2-1 as they are set to face the loser of Game 12 between Monterrey, MX and Palmview, TX. That game will be tomorrow at 12:30pm. The loss eliminates San Jose from title contention. Their final record in the tournament was 1-2.

Game 11 : New Taipei City, Chinese Taipei 2, Johnstown, PA 4


In a battle of the undefeateds, Johnstown, PA came out on top over New Taipei City, Chinese Taipei by a score of 4-2.

Dante LaRocco of Johnstown hit a bomb just inside the left field foul pole to lead off the bottom of the first and make the score 1-0. They continued the scoring in the third when Charlie Manzi doubled and Brock Bryson singled to bring him home. It increased their lead to 2-0.

In the fourth Drew Irons led off the inning with a line drive home run off the right field foul poul to bring the score to 3-0. 

New Taipei City’s first real opportunity came in the fifth when they loaded the bases but a force out at second ended the threat. A fourth run crossed the plate in the same frame for Johnstown after a Bryson single brought home LaRocco to bring the score to 4-0.

A comeback effort was mounted by New Taipei City in the top of the seventh as they put up two. The first run came on an error that scored Cheng-Hao Chen. A second run crossed the plate on a Wei-Zhe Hong single. New Taipei City couldn’t deliver two more runs as the matchup with a score of 4-2.

Irons had a phenomenal outing on the mound for Johnstown as he went six and two thirds. He only allowed three hits in those innings of work and didn’t allow a run until the final inning. Eric McAllister entered in the seventh and made the final batter pop out to earn the save.

Hong went 2-for-2 in the game with an RBI for New Taipei City.

The win improves Johnstown to 2-0 as they will advance to the semi-final Game 15. They will face off against the winner of Game 13 between New Taipei City, Chinese Taipei and Bay County, MI. The winning team in that matchup will have to defeat Johnstown twice to advance to the championship. The semi-final Game 15 will take place at 5:30pm tomorrow.

With the loss, New Taipei City’s record falls to 1-1 as they will face Bay County, MI in an elimination game at 10:00am tomorrow. The winner will advance to the aforementioned Game 15 semi-finals against Johnstown, having to win twice to advance to the finals.

Game 12 : Monterrey, MX 10, Palmview, TX 4


Monterrey, MX used its lively bats to take the nightcap game from Palmview, TX by a score of 10-4.

They struck first in the first inning on an error that scored Diego Alvarado. A few scoreless innings passed until they tacked on two more in the fourth on a Miguel Alejandro Jr. home run to make it 3-0. 

Alejandro Jr. was inches away from a grand slam in the fifth but he settled for an RBI single. Patricio Villareal followed the RBI single with one of his own that made the score 5-0. A two-RBI Alvarado single increased the deficit and a Luis Guajardo single brought in the final two of the inning to make it 9-0.

Palmview finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with four runs. A Gilberto Rodriguez Jr. single brought in one run followed by a Daren Garcia single that brought in two more. A Matthew Azuara double seemed to keep the run going, but he was gunned down at third to end the inning. It left the score at 9-4.

Monterrey added one final run in the seventh on a Yosiro Eguia single and that made the score 10-4.

Israel Herrera had a good performance on the mound as he went five complete innings while allowing four runs on four hits. He struck out ten. Isai Garza finished out the game.

Azura had the best individual performance for Palmview as he went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI.

With the win, Monterrey improves to 2-0 as they will advance to the semi-final Game 16. They will face off against the winner of Game 14 between Palmview, TX and Washington County, PA. The winning team in that matchup will have to defeat Monterrey twice to advance to the championship. The semi-final Game 16 will take place at 8:00pm tomorrow.

The loss makes Palmview’s record fall to 1-1 as they will face Washington County, PA in an elimination game at 12:30pm tomorrow. The winner will advance to the aforementioned Game 16 semi-finals against Monterrey, with the winning team having to beat them twice to advance to the finals.
