2022 DICK'S Sporting Goods Pony League World Series Day 5

Game 13 : New Taipei City, Chinese Taipei 12, Bay County, MI 0 (5 INNINGS)


Early and frequent scoring propelled New Taipei City, Chinese Taipei over Bay County, MI 12-0.

New Taipei City put up four runs on four hits in the first inning to put Bay County in a 4-0 hole early on. Hong Wei-Zhe started off the inning with a double and was brought in on a Lee Cheng-Yen single. A couple errors and a Chiu Sheng-Hung Gao single brought in the next three runs.

In the second, A Shih Cheng-Yu line drive single caused an error that brought home Wei-Zhe. Yang Wen-Wei then doubled to score both Cheng-Yu and Sun Kai-You. Gao brought in yet another to increase the lead to 8-0 after two.

They reached double digits in the third as the score grew to 10-0 following a Cheng-Yen sacrifice fly and Cheng-Yu double. Wen-Wei started the fourth with a home run to bring the score to 11-0. A Cheng-Yen single brought home a twelfth run.

Kao Yi-Ming started the game for Chinese Taipei and threw well. He went three innings while allowing no runs on four hits. Lu Gaun-Wei went in for the fourth and threw one and two thirds allowing only one hit. Lin Xin-Hong closed out the game.

Five New Taipei City players had a multi-hit game with Wei-Zhe, Wen-Wei, and Sheng-Hung having two hits each. Cheng-Yen and Cheng-Yu had three hits.

Jaxon Jenkins went 2-for-2 for Bay County.

The win improves New Taipei City to 2-1 as they advance to the semi-final rematch against Johnstown, PA. That game will take place at 5:30pm tonight. They will have to defeat Johnstown twice to advance to the championship.

With the loss, Bay County is eliminated from title contention. They finished their tournament 2-2.

Game 14 : Palmview, TX 5, Washington County, PA 6


A nail-biter rematch between Palmview, TX and Washington County, PA belongs to Washington County by a score of 6-5.

Not much action took place in the first couple of innings but in the third, Washington County struck first. Ian Migyanko singled to start the inning and advanced to second on a balk. A LJ Zidek single sent him to third and he scored on an errant throw by the centerfielder. It made the score 1-0.

Palmview got two on board in the top of the fourth after a Matthew Azuara single and Alfonso Bueno walk. Osi Lopez laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the two runners into scoring position. A ground ball to the shortstop looked like it would end the inning, but Ezekiel Hernandez showed maximum effort with a dive into first base and was safe. It brought home both runners to make the score 2-1.

Washington County loaded the bases up with no outs in the fifth following a Migyanko single, Zidek single, and AJ Andronas walk. They tied the game the next batter as Maruschak hit a hard grounder up the middle that ricocheted off the pitcher to the shortstop who had no other play than to get the out at first. Nico Patragas then delivered a dagger after a three run homer that made the score 5-2.

Another run was tacked on in the sixth for insurance on an error to make it 6-2.

A comeback was mounted by Palmview as the first three batters reached and the tying run in Anthony Rocha came to the plate. He was hit by a pitch and that brought the score to 6-3. Gilberto Rodriguez, who was 1-for-7 in the tournament to that point, came through when it mattered most with a single that brought the score to 6-5. They loaded the bases with two outs and looked to make a thrilling comeback but a flyout ended the threat and the game.

Sebastian Shulsky started for Washington County and went six innings while allowing two runs on two hits. He struck out seven. 

With the win, Washington County improves to 3-1. They will move on to face Monterrey, Mexico in the semi-finals at 8:00pm tonight. Washington County will have to beat them twice to advance to the championship.

The loss puts Palmview’s final record at 1-2 as they are eliminated from title contention.

Game 15 : New Taipei City, Chinese Taipei 7, Johnstown, PA 3


New Taipei City, Chinese Taipei and Johnstown, PA’s exciting semi-final rematch ended with a 7-3 score in favor of New Taipei City.

Mistakes hurt Johnstown early as they allowed New Taipei City to get on the board in the first following a couple of errors. New Taipei City tacked on another in the top of the second as Chang Shao-Chun delivered with an RBI single scoring Yang Wen-Wei.

The score stood at 2-0 for the next two and a half innings before the bottom of the fifth when Johnstown got on the board. An Ethan Shank single brought Drew Irons across the plate to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.

Charlie Manzi came up huge in the bottom of the sixth with a solo shot to tie the game up 2-2. 

The thrilling game went into extras after both teams failed to break the tie.

New Taipei City immediately loaded the bases in the top of the eighth following back-to-back singles by Wei-Zong and Lin Xin-Hong. Lee Cheng-Yen attempted a sacrifice bunt and an error allowed him to reach as well. A walk brought in a run to make it 3-2 New Taipei City. A hit by pitch brought home another to make it 4-2. Two more walks brought home the fifth and sixth runs, making it 6-2. A Shao-Chun single to right field brought in the seventh, and final run to make it 7-2.

Johnstown attempted to come back in the bottom half of the frame but fell short. Bryson singled and brought home Dante LaRocco to make it 7-3.

Both starting pitchers were impressive on the mound with Brock Bryson toeing the rubber for Johnstown and Wei-Zong for New Taipei City.

Bryson went seven full innings while allowing three runs on seven hits. He reached his pitch count in the eighth and was replaced by Eric McAllister.

For victorious New Taipei City, Wei-Zhe went five and a hit, allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out 11.

The win puts New Taipei City’s record at 3-1 as they force the ‘if necessary’ Game 17. It will take place at 10:00am tomorrow with the winner advancing to the championship.

With the loss, Johnstown falls to 2-1 as they will have a shot in tomorrow’s game to qualify for the championship.

Game 16 : Monterrey, MX 14, Washington County, PA 2


The nightcap game was a game of the long ball with both teams combining for five home runs as Monterrey, MX took down Washington County, PA 14-2.

The first few innings were quiet before AJ Andronas got Washington County on the board with a two run home run to make the score 2-0.

Monterrey didn’t waste any time responding as Luis Guajardo hit a three run home run. A couple batters later, Daniel Gonzalez singled in a run and was followed by an absolute missile of a home run by Miguel Alejandro Jr. This inning brought the score to 7-2.

In the bottom of the fifth Monterrey continued to stack the runs on the board as a Patricio Villareal single brought in a run followed by an Emiliano Martinez moonshot that sent home two more. The score grew to 10-2.

An error brought home an eleventh run before a walkoff Israel Herrera put Washington County away, 14-2.

Martinez threw great for Monterrey as he went six innings while allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out ten.

The best individual performance for Washington County came from LJ Zidek who went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

The other two Washington County hits came from Nico Patragas and Andronas.

With the win, Monterrey automatically advances to the championship game. They will await the winner of New Taipei City, Chinese Taipei and Johnstown, PA for their opponent. The championship will be at 7:00pm.

The loss drops Washington County’s record to 3-2 as they are eliminated from title contention.
