National Volunteer Week
On August 22, 2022, Saginaw, TX was hit by a storm that caused significant flooding across the area. The Pioneer Youth Baseball and Softball Association was hit hard, especially their South end of the ballpark. This was nothing new to the PYBSA ballpark. Being located in a flood plain they expect water to gather anytime it rains. However, this time it was different.
As PYBSA President, Vice President, and Senior Field Director gathered to walk the fields and survey the damage they realized how bad things really were. Flood waters had ravaged their ballfields, breaking the outfield fences on three fields. Completely taking down the left field fence of their main softball field. And wiping out the infield dirt from three of the fields. Not to mention the amount of debris left behind from the creeks on either side of the ballfields flooding into the main area. You can see the extent of the damage in the pictures below.
With the season opener only two weeks away they had no clue what they were going to do to get the ballfields ready to go in time. From their calculations, they had at least two weeks of hard work to even try to get the fields ready. They posted photos of the damages on the Facebook page with a call for help. They never expected the turnout they received.
August 27, 2022, PYBSA opened their ballfields at 8am for what they expected to be one of many coming workdays. It was already discussed that they might have to delay the season opener. In just a short hour, all thoughts of delaying the season had disappeared. PYBSA President watched in awe as more and more volunteers showed up, tractors began to arrive, and the entire local Boswell High School Baseball team arrived to help. Before they knew it, the ballpark began to transform. New dirt was shoveled and distributed to infields that had been bare, debris began to be cut away, fences were fixed, new chalk sheds were built, and the common areas and picnic tables were cleaned. By noon not only was the ballpark better than it had been but the two weeks of work had been completed.
PYBSA prides itself on building community and becoming a family. But in August of 2022, the community of Saginaw showed PYBSA that their community, their family, is much more far-reaching than they could've ever imagined.
