Day 5 of the 2025 Pony-13 World Series
Game 19 - Tijuana, Baja, Mexico (2) vs. Vega Alta, Puerto Rico (6)
Vega Alta, Puerto Rico delivered a complete performance on Tuesday at Aviara Community Park, defeating Tijuana, Baja, Mexico 6-2 behind a dominant outing from Diego Suarez.
Vega Alta broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third inning when a wild pitch allowed the game’s first run to cross the plate. They added two more in the fourth to extend their lead, forcing Tijuana to play from behind for the remainder of the game.
Suarez was outstanding on the mound, throwing a complete game. The right-hander surrendered just two hits and two unearned runs over seven innings, striking out five without issuing a walk. His command and efficiency kept Tijuana’s offense off balance all afternoon.
Tijuana starter M. Reyes was equally impressive early, striking out nine batters in just 3.2 innings of work. He allowed five hits and three runs before handing the ball to the bullpen.
At the plate, Vega Alta’s offense was steady and balanced. D. Castro and D. Figueroa provided the spark, each collecting two hits while hitting back-to-back in the order. Castro, Figueroa, E. Rivera, and Suarez each drove in a run to help secure the win. Vega Alta also flashed the leather defensively, turning a key double play to halt a potential Tijuana rally.
For Tijuana, J. Rosales and S. Gross were the bright spots, each notching a hit while hitting consecutively in the lineup. Rosales drove in one of Tijuana’s two runs and finished 1-for-3 at the plate.
With the win, Vega Alta, Puerto Rico bounced back from their previous loss and gained momentum heading deeper into tournament play. Their strong pitching and timely hitting will make them a team to watch going forward.
Congratulations to Tijuana, Baja, Mexico on their 2025 PONY-13 World Series Appearance! The team finished with a 3-2 record, and they have been eliminated from the World Series. Vega Alta, Puerto Rico will face Chiba, Japan in the PONY-13 World Series Championship on July 29 at 6:00PM.
Championship Game - Chiba, Japan (9) vs. Vega Alta, Puerto Rico (0)
Chiba, Japan turned in a dominant all-around performance on Tuesday at Aviara Community Park, blanking Vega Alta, Puerto Rico 9-0 behind a three-pitcher shutout. S. Uchida, Haruto Eguchi, and Ichito Ohama combined to stifle the Puerto Rican lineup, allowing just three hits all game. Eguchi struck out J. Veiazquez to record the final out and secure the win.
Uchida set the tone from the start, delivering a masterful outing on the mound. The right-hander struck out 10 batters over five scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and issuing no walks. His precision and power completely neutralized Vega Alta’s offense.
Chiba’s bats provided early run support, scoring three times in the bottom of the first inning. K. Katsuta singled to center field to drive in the first run, followed by an RBI single down the right field line from T. Nagata. H. Hirai added a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 3-0. The offense continued to apply pressure throughout the game, capitalizing on Vega Alta miscues to build a comfortable lead. Y. Okada led the team with two RBIs, while Katsuta and Nagata paced the lineup with two hits apiece, hitting back-to-back at the top of the order.
On the other side, Vega Alta starter E. Rivera battled but struggled against the disciplined Chiba lineup. He allowed seven hits and seven runs (three earned) over 4.1 innings. Eguchi and Ohama each pitched scoreless frames in relief for Chiba, sealing the combined shutout effort. Defensively, Chiba was flawless, committing no errors in the field. T. Suzuki anchored the defense with 10 chances handled cleanly.
For Vega Alta, D. Castro, Rivera, and Diego Suarez each recorded one hit, but the offense was never able to mount a sustained rally.
Congratulations to the 2025 PONY-13 World Series Runner Up - Vega Alta, Puerto Rico and congratulations on their 2025 PONY-13 World Series Appearance! The team finished with a 3-2 record, and they have been eliminated from the World Series.
With the victory and finishing 4-0, Chiba, Japan is the 2025 PONY-13 World Series Champions!
